I am a fan of the Gartner hype cycle. I think it very effectively captures what most products and/or businesses go through. However, one must keep in mind that it is a generalization. As pointed out above, different aspects of a business or service may be at different parts of the cycle. Not all products follow the cycle as laid out. In the incredibly fast-moving world of tech, this is even more true. I don’t think technologies like Facebook that are still moving through the cycle can always be accurately categorized as a whole until the plateau of productivity is reached.
